Music

At The Study School children experience music from all over the world and have access to a huge range of instrumental lessons from an excellent set of peripatetic staff.

Music plays an important part in life at The Study School. All children from Nursery to Year Six are taught Music at least once a week by a specialist music teacher. The curriculum is varied and exciting and uses elements of the Kodály method and some Dalcroze. Pupils sing regularly and are able to develop their musical understanding and ability through a wide range of activities.

In Year Two our children are taught the violin as part of their curricular music lessons. Those pupils continuing to learn the violin in Year Three are offered group lessons free of charge for the year, before taking individual lessons in Year Four. Typically children from the scheme will take their grade five violin examination before moving on to their chosen secondary school.

Most children in the upper years learn at least one instrument in school time. We are fortunate to have a fantastic team of nine visiting professional musicians offering individual tuition on the instruments listed below. Lessons taking place during the school day are scheduled on a carousel system and, where appropriate, pupils are encouraged to work towards ABRSM examinations.

There are many opportunities for pupils to perform throughout the year; informal performances in class, Harvest Festival, Inter-House Music Festival, Christmas Carol Service, Nativities, Spring Concerts, Summer Musicals and Prize-giving Concert. All children perform as part of their class and many take part in the plethora of ensemble groups that rehearse weekly: Orchestra, Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Flute Ensemble, String Quartet and several smaller Year Six chamber groups.

Our pupils are also given opportunities to perform in many prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, O2 and Festival Hall.
